HYPER – Reducing Handling of Cooling Tower Treatment Products

HYPER – Reducing Handling of Cooling Tower Treatment Products

Background

Handling of chemical products for treatment of cooling towers can be a problem where the unit is located in a difficult to reach location or where access is restricted, such as by a stairway or ladder. In such locations, treatment with traditional liquid based products, often with desired product levels of 100 to 500 mg/l in the treated cooling water, is not practical due to the amount of product required.

ProChemTech addressed this problem by development of very concentrated liquid products, our HYPER or “6600” series products. Recently a return to the archaic “solid”, or gel, products has gained market interest as a “new” means to cut down on product handling. These solid products require use of a costly, proprietary dissolution system for proper application and are limited as to the chemistry available due to restrictions imposed by the solidification process.

“Solid” products are also advertised as being less costly than liquid products. While this is true for many competitor products on the market, it is false as to most products manufactured by ProChemTech. The following table is a comparison of two products recommended for use in the LSI range of 2.0 to 3.0. Product “A” is from a well known solid chemical manufacturer while the second Product “B” is a standard liquid product, not a HYPER, manufactured by ProChemTech.  Specifications for these two products are shown and the $/lb actives is easily calculated.

Product $/lb Feed Rate

mg/l product

Control Limits

mg/l phosphonate

% phosphonate $/lb actives
A 6.75 25 to 40 5 to 7 20 33.75
B 1.70 100 to 150 6.5 to 10 6.7 25.37

This table clearly shows that the “solid” product is considerably more expensive than our standard liquid product as far as $/lb actives delivered are concerned.  So, in addition to a complex, expensive feed system, replacement of a ProChemTech manufactured standard liquid treatment product increases the cost of chemical treatment, in this case by approximately 29.4%.

Technology Application

This all seems quite complicated when better results can be obtained simply by using a concentrated liquid product. We have addressed the handling and restricted chemistry problems by development of extremely concentrated liquid products that can be fed using standard chemical pumps controlled using industry standard techniques such as “feed bleed” and proportional feed.  These products, trade named “HYPER”, are available with several of our patented technologies such as Aqua-Save, a technology for maximum cycles with extremely hard, alkaline makeup water, and BlueTrace, a spectrophotometric tracer for control of product dosage.

HYPER products utilize water management industry standard and Aqua-Save chemistry, just in a concentrated liquid form that minimizes handling problems in difficult locations. Typical feed rates range from 8 to 120 mg/l, easily matching the feed rates of the solid products without the problem of costly, complex, proprietary dissolution and feed systems. A side benefit is that shipping costs are minimized, more actives are provided per pound of product.

We are pleased to offer the following HYPER products.

HYPER 6601 – A low cost, traditional AMP phosphonate – polymer blend good for lower hardness waters, COC maximum is determined by the equation:

COC = (√110,000/(CaH x TA)) -1

Product feed rate is 8 to 25 mg/l with phosphonate titration test control levels of 2 to 6 mg/l.

HYPER 6651 – A higher performance AMP phosphonate – polymer blend good for moderate hardness waters, COC maximum is determined by the equation:

COC = (√110,000/(CaH x TA))

Product feed rate is 15 to 25 mg/l with phosphonate titration test control levels of 4 to 6 mg/l.

HYPER 6654 – A higher performance AMP phosphonate – copolymer blend good for moderate hardness waters with corrosion products, dust, and phosphate in the makeup, COC maximum is determined by the equation:

COC = (√110,000/(CaH x TA))

Product feed rate is 25 to 50 mg/l with phosphonate titration test control levels of 4 to 8 mg/l.

HYPER 6671 B/M – An Aqua-Save patented product with either BlueTrace or molybdate for dose control. Best product for control of scale and obtaining higher cycles of concentration with hard, alkaline makeup waters.   COC maximum is determined by the equation:

COC = 2 + (√110,000/(CaH x TA))

Product feed rate is 60 to 120 mg/l with BlueTrace control limits of 20 to 40 abs, molybdate control levels of 1 to 2 mg/l as Mo.
