Current technology for biological control of cooling tower water uses various oxidizing and non-oxidizing chemical products known as biocides. Biocides, used to kill micro-organisms, are meant to be toxic. While often effective at killing the micro-organisms, biocides also present users with problems such as high costs, health and safety concerns, adverse environmental impacts, and chemical compatibility issues with products used for corrosion and scale control. To eliminate the problems associated with transport, storage, handling, and use of dangerous chemical biocides, ProChemTech International, Inc. has developed a revolutionary new technology, the ElectroBrom Biocide System™. This patent-pending system produces an on-site aqueous solution of bromine biocide by electrolysis of a USEPA registered, non-hazardous precursor aqueous salt solution.

Because the precursor salt solution is USEPA registered and non-hazardous, users do not worry about accidental spills of hazardous chemicals during transport and storage or employee injuries from handling and use of toxic chemicals.
Not only is bromine more effective than chlorine at typical cooling water pH values, but it also has a lower vapor pressure than ozone, chlorine, and chlorine dioxide, so less product escapes into the air.
In the ElectroBrom Biocide System, the active product is made as it is needed; money isn’t wasted as the product degrades in storage.
The bromine biocide reverts to harmless bromide ion in a short time, so there is no toxic blowdown.
It easily provides the continuous halogenation recommended by OSHA and CTI for the control of Legionnaires’ Disease.
The environmental impact is extremely low; it earns LEED and ISO 14000 credit for elimination of toxic chemicals.
The system cost much less than non-oxidizing biocides, and ElectroBrom units are leased, so there are no capital or maintenance costs to the user.

The ElectroBrom Biocide System can be paired with the SafeChem non-hazardous water treatment chemicals for a complete, low environmental impact water treatment program. The SafeChem treatment line was specially formulated to cost-effectively control scale, corrosion, and deposition and to be compatible with the ElectroBrom Biocide System.
